In high school Drew Brophy’s guidance counselor pulled him aside and sternly warned, “Drew, you can’t just surf and paint your whole life.” Determined to prove her wrong he has been a professional surf lifestyle artist for over 25 years.
Against all odds, Drew has carved an unlikely profession out of creating surf inspired paintings, murals and products; all while traveling the world, chasing big waves and adventure with his wife and son. If you ask Drew what he does for a living, he’ll say “It’s my job to make things look cool.”
LIFESTYLE: All his life Drew's been chasing big swells around the globe. This eventually evolved into standup paddle surfing big waves; SUP was a new challenge that tested his abilities. Drew helped spread the sport through his travels. Standup paddling then led to adventures inland. Drew and Seth Warren were the first to successfully standup paddle the entire 225 miles of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in 2010.
ART; THE BEGINNING: Drew's career took off when he started painting his edgy artwork onto surfboards. Known worldwide, using techniques that he developed with water-based paint pens, he’s traveled the globe painting for some of the best surfboard shapers in the world; teaching others his techniques along the way. Drew is credited as the artist who literally changed the way surfboards are painted.
In the late 1990s, Drew expanded his artwork for use on many things; skateboards, t-shirts, wakeboards and other items. Having the opportunity to experiment with many different surfaces and products allowed Drew to grow tremendously as an artist. He has created thousands of paintings over the years, and developed a distinct style of bright colors and artistic energy; well recognized, and often imitated.
INFLUENCE: Due to his painting videos, books, TV show and generously sharing his techniques, Drew's style has led to an explosion of creativity for other artists. His strong influence is evident as his style is emulated by thousands of artists around the world.
SUCCESS: Drew partners with large companies such as Google, Verizon, Converse, Sigg and Wham O. His keen ability to take a brand's message and parlay it into art that attracts customers has allowed him to solve design problems for his clients, while keeping his own art style and integrity intact.
Collectors of Drew's original paintings include Eddie Vedder, Kid Rock, The Hard Rock Casino Las Vegas, Vince Neil of Motley Crue and Sheryl Crow, to name a few. With help from his business partner and wife, Maria, Drew has made his paintings available for licensing and currently is partnered with many companies to create cool products with his art. Together, they help other artists find success, as well, through workshops and blogs.
THE ART: Every image begins life as a painting, created in either Drew’s studio in San Clemente, California, or on the road while traveling. Original paintings are available to collectors through art shows and online sales. The digital images are then added to his licensing program and/or made available as reproductions.
Drew paints the lifestyle he and his family live, one filled with peeling waves, sun-swept beaches and the simple joys life has to offer.
Drew's mission is "to inspire generations of people to live the life of their dreams." He strives to be an example and show the world the good life through his artwork. Drew's mantra is “Life is Good,” and it is!
